So… did you?
Um no Andrea. Um, me thinks not for first grade. I think this is more of a fourth grade activity! I am picturing us sitting down for some good ‘ole home educating, her with her spelling notebook, and me dictating select naughty words, with her diligently sounding each one out so she can spell it correctly in her little notebook. We have talked about the words “ass” and tonight “gay”. Both come up because they appearsin many of the books we read. Pinocchio, many fables, and today we read a child’s version of A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, and “ass” is in all of these selections….so had to explain that we don’t really use that word to describe donkeys anymore, so she probably shouldn’t use it in everyday speech. I could just edit it as I read, but now she reads with me over my shoulder so when I say “donkey” she says, “but mommy, that says ‘Ass’ not ‘donkey’”. Same with “gay”. I had to define what it means today, and how it can be offensive to some, so perhaps until she is older and has a better grasp of when it is appropropriate and when it could be offensive, she should refrain from using it altogether.
So even though I say it is more of a fourth grade activity, obviously she is gifted, and starting slowly at the tender age of 6.
